I haven’t written anything for a while because I was busy with other things. Life is what happens while you make other plans…. Our VW T2 van, containing a lot of good, fun and happy memories, has burned down… literally. In the morning it was still a beautifully restored and well-maintained campervan, but in a matter of minutes it changed from a burning torch to a burned-out wreck. As bad as this is, what does this have to do with repair our future? Because, of course, we should try to last a long time with everything, because we all know by now that the consumer society in which things are made to be used up quickly, is not a future-proof model. Now this 1976 VW T2 van has had quite a long life, but with some preparation we might have been able to prevent this fire. Now for us it is too late, but maybe someone reading this can still benefit from it ;-). Because after the van burned down, I was first told by several people that they have had the same thing, so this is a problem that can occur with this kind of air-cooled old Volkswagen vans. Secondly, I also got a suggestion how this could have been prevented. Of course I would have preferred to have known sooner… There is such a thing as an automatic motorcycle extinguisher, under the name Blazecut. This might have prevented the burnout. We are working on a replacement for our bus, and will certainly see if installing such an automatic fire extinguisher for that camper is also an option. This new camper van should also become a bit more environmentally friendly, but more about that in my next blog!
PS: We were well insured and have received the money already, which is enough to buy a VW T2 in the same state again, but it will suffice to buy another campervan, 😉
